Introducing Our New Teachers (4)


    The 2019-20 school year welcomes a large group of new teachers. We asked all of our new teachers to the district to share some information so we could all get to know them a bit. They are a fascinating group!

NameSusan Smith
Teaching Assignment: English Language Development
Building Assignment: Strayer Middle School
Teaching Experience: This year is my sixth year teaching. I have taught in Philadelphia, Allentown, and Florida. I have taught both ELA/Literature and ELD at the middle and high school levels.
Hobbies/Interests: I enjoy spending time with family and friends, exploring new places, and trying new Korean skin care products.
Why did you become a teacher?: I had many teachers in my life who inspired me to become a teacher.
What is your favorite part of teaching? My favorite part of teaching is the students - helping, loving, and educating them. They also teach me so much!
What is one thing you want the community to know? I was able to study abroad in Jerusalem, Israel and the West Bank in college and complete my student teaching in Amman, Jordan.

Hobbies/Interests: Camping, Cross Country Road trips, National Parks, Science News, Politics, Disc Golf
Why did you become a teacher?: I like working with people, the intellectual stimulation, and the unique dynamics of the teaching and learning environment.
What is your favorite part of teaching? Facilitating and witnessing moments of enlightenment in students.
What is one thing you want the community to know? This summer my wife and I, our two daughters under 5, and our dog took a nearly 10,000 mile road-trip from Pennsylvania to the Oregon coast and back, tent-camping in backyards and national parks along the way. Our favorite destinations included Yosemite National Park in California and Glacier National Park in Montana.

NameVictoria Travor
Teaching Assignment: Health and Physical Education, Long-term Substitute
Building Assignment: Senior High School
Teaching Experience: 3 years
Hobbies/Interests: Spending time with my family and best friends, being active outside, cooking really good food, and motivating others to challenge themselves in their fitness journey throughout life.
Why did you become a teacher?: To encourage students to value their health, educate students on how to stay physically and emotionally fit, and equipping students with the right motor skills that way they can stay active throughout life.
What is your favorite part of teaching? Seeing my students realize that taking care of their body physically and emotionally is not only hard work but rewarding, fun, and worth it.
What is one thing you want the community to know? I went to the International Hall of Fame for swimming.

NameRachael Urquhart
Teaching Assignment: Band Director
Building Assignment: Strayer Middle School
Teaching Experience: Various long-term sub positions teaching middle school general music and chorus, elementary band, high school band/marching band/theory, and elementary general music. I have also taught college band and marching band during my graduate assistantship. I am so thankful for the perspective I have gained through my experiences!
Hobbies/Interests: My dog, crafting, distance running
Why did you become a teacher?: My band directors (Dave Kenney, Andrew Yozviak, Frank Parker, Adam Gumble) when I was a student here so strongly influenced my life in such a positive way that I knew in 7th grade I wanted to be a music teacher to hopefully provide those experiences to the next generations of students.
What is your favorite part of teaching? I get to watch students grow, mature, become self-disciplined, self-motivated, and learn life lessons, teamwork, and cooperation through music. Helping students reach the highest level of musicianship they possibly can and getting to create amazing musical experiences is also pretty great!
What is one thing you want the community to know? Getting to be a band director at home, in the place where I first realized this is what I wanted to do with my life, is so surreal and special. I am super thankful that I am someone who gets to live out their dream everyday!

Name: Ashley Walter
Teaching Assignment: Learning Support
Building Assignment: Pfaff Elementary School
Teaching Experience: 2 years, Centennial School of Lehigh
Hobbies/Interests: Soccer, working out, hanging with friends/family, traveling
Why did you become a teacher?: I became a teacher to make a difference in the lives of my students and to help them grow.
 What is your favorite part of teaching? My favorite part of teaching is watching a child complete a task that they previously thought they couldn't do.What is one thing you want the community to know? I coach travel soccer.

Teaching Experience: 5 years
Hobbies/Interests: mountain biking, hiking, playing with my dog Mazy
Why did you become a teacher?: To be an advocate for my students.
What is your favorite part of teaching? Working with students to help them achieve their goals and realize their potential.
What is one thing you want the community to know? I went whitewater rafting on Class IV rapids on the Colorado River this summer! It was a blast!

NameNatalie Woodward
Teaching Assignment: Behavior Analyst
Building Assignment: Strayer Middle School, Senior High School
Teaching Experience: 7 years as Special Education Teacher and district Behavior Analyst. Over 10 years working in the field of Behavior Analysis.
Hobbies/Interests: Watching my children in their sports, Penn State football, college basketball
 Why did you become a teacher?: To improve the lives of children and foster independence in the students I work with.
What is your favorite part of teaching? Seeing the growth in students and of course having summers off!
What is one thing you want the community to know? I was a collegiate water polo player and still hold the school record for career goals scored (Gannon University).
